Volunteering in West Yorkshire North

Our volunteers make Guiding adventures happen for our young members. They support over 2000 girls to build their confidence, create lifelong friendships, learn new things and make a positive difference in their communities. Our volunteers make a real difference to girls, making memories that last a lifetime.

What volunteers do

The contributions of volunteers across Girlguiding West Yorkshire North is varied and depends on volunteer interests, availability and the needs of the unit they work with.

Whilst some volunteers run units or help units with set activities, others support with fundraising events, admin, unit accounts, running local shops/depots and helping with maintenance or gardening at our properties. Whatever your skills and interests, there is a volunteering opportunity suitable for you!

Who can volunteer?

Anyone can volunteer! We don't expect expert campfire builders and knot skills and you don't have to have been a member of Guiding before. There are roles working with girls and supporting roles behind the scenes, so come and discover a role to suit you - find out more below!

Benefits of volunteering with us

According to Girlguiding’s Impact Report, Girlguiding volunteers’ happiness is 5 times higher than those who volunteer at least once per month elsewhere.

You’ll have lots of fun and have access to exciting opportunities, while gaining valuable skills that give your qualifications a boost.

You can gain recognised qualifications in leadership, walking, water safety, catering, holiday licences, and even running large-scale events.

We know that time can be tight, and that’s why we have flexible volunteering opportunities that let you make a difference at a time that works for you.

More details about flexible volunteering and how to register can be found on the Girlguiding website or by following the links below.

All volunteers are covered by Girlguiding’s Personal Accident and Public Liability Insurance while carrying out Guiding activities, giving you complete peace of mind.

Current Vacancies

We are looking for people to become Trustees for the county:

  • Someone currently a leader in a county unit

  • Someone aged 18–30

  • Someone external to guiding.

An awareness session will be held for those looking into Trusteeship.

Have you got a head for figures? Could you support our county finances by helping to budget for activities, events and trainings, as well as financially manage WYNCHES? Then we'd love to hear from you!

If you have ever wondered what a commissioner does and enjoy working with adult volunteers and supporting girl events, then why not take the next step and become a commissioner! You could even ask your current division/district commissioners about the role.

County Treasurer

County Trustee

Commissioner

County Commissioner/ Deputy County Commissioner

Archery

We have a fantastic archery team but a couple more instructors would make a big difference to their committed time and would enable more groups to experience this great activity.

Training is funded in return for taking sessions based at WYNCHES.

Details of upcoming archery training can be found on the training page.

Become a part of a small team to:

  • Manage, develop and nurture our amazing county in all aspects of girl experience

  • Support advisors and co-ordinators who have specific specialities and experience

  • Support division commissioners

  • Manage complaints, safeguarding and compliance

  • Represent our county at a regional North East England level

These roles sound big, but they are really rewarding and provide a real sense of worthwhile contribution!

Mentors

We have a good number of excellent and willing mentors who support Leaders  in Training and Young Leaders, but there is always room for more!

We also need mentors to support volunteers who are embarking on the Going Away Scheme Qualification.

West Yorkshire North currently have no qualified walking advisers and have needed to bring such volunteers from out of county for DofE expeditions.

We need volunteers qualified in the Walking Scheme or who are willing to undertake the Walking Qualification Scheme. Are you interested? Then again, please email the office!

WYNCHES

Already well advertised through our mailings, but future working parties this year are on a break until:

September 12th/13th

October 10th/11th

Tuesday Troubleshooters will still be running throughout the summer.

Adventure

We have recently had to cancel the Adventure days due to insufficient volunteers to run the event.

To plan for the future, we need volunteers right across the county to really think outside the box as to how we can promote activities like archery, walking and water activities, as well as providing some structured opportunities for training volunteers who want to take their girls on holiday, camps, internationals and DofE etc.

So, we are looking for an Adventure representative from each division to form a team who will ensure all things adventure are communicated between county and volunteers on the front line of Guiding. You don’t need to be an expert in anything adventurous, you just need to have inspiration, fun, enthusiasm and good communication skills!

Find out more about any
of these roles by emailing wynoffice@gmail.com
